A guide to shopping in downtown Plymouth

Where to park, when to come, and how to make a day of it in one of southeast Michigan's most walkable downtowns — with Home Sweet Home as your first stop.

Half an hour from both Detroit and Ann Arbor, downtown Plymouth is built for a slow, browsing kind of afternoon — park once, and spend the whole day on foot.

Plymouth, Michigan sits in western Wayne County, an easy drive from most of Metro Detroit. Its compact, tree-lined downtown is anchored by Kellogg Park, with shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants radiating out along Main Street, Penniman Avenue, Forest Avenue, and Ann Arbor Trail. It's the rare downtown where you can leave the car in one spot and wander the whole afternoon.

Home Sweet Home has been part of that downtown since 2007, in a custom 19th-century-style storefront at 852 W Ann Arbor Trail — a few steps from Kellogg Park. Here's how we'd suggest making the most of a day of shopping in Plymouth.

Why Plymouth is worth the drive

Great shopping districts reward you with more than a single errand, and Plymouth does exactly that. The downtown is genuinely walkable, the storefronts are full of character, and there's enough around them — coffee, lunch, a movie at the historic Penn Theatre, the self-guided Plymouth ArtWalk — that a shopping trip easily becomes a full outing. For anyone looking for independent, boutique shopping near Detroit or Ann Arbor, a downtown like Plymouth is the destination.

Planning your visit

The practical details

Getting here & parking

Plymouth is reachable in about 30 minutes from downtown Detroit and from Ann Arbor, and less from Livonia, Northville, Canton, and the surrounding communities. Downtown offers free street parking and municipal lots a short walk from the shops; on a normal day you'll have no trouble finding a spot within a block or two of Ann Arbor Trail. For the easiest arrival, head straight to the free Plymouth Central Parking Deck at 333 S Harvey St — it's just behind our store, and the link will navigate you right to it.

When to come

Because our inventory turns over constantly and every room is restyled through the seasons, no two visits look alike — regulars stop in often precisely because there's always something new. Weekday and early-afternoon visits tend to be the most relaxed if you like to browse unhurried. We're open Monday through Saturday, 10–5, and Sunday 12–5; it's never a bad idea to call ahead at (734) 455-5459 if you're making a special trip for something in particular.

Make a day of it

Plymouth's downtown events turn an ordinary visit into an occasion. Art in the Park each July is one of Michigan's largest art fairs, drawing hundreds of artists and huge crowds to Kellogg Park. Autumn brings Pumpkin Palooza and downtown harvest festivities; the holidays light up with the Kellogg Park tree lighting, the Walk of Trees, and Christmas in Plymouth. Any of these pairs beautifully with a leisurely afternoon of shopping.

We have a soft spot for the holidays in particular: our own owner, Carol, founded Christmas in Plymouth and still takes part each season. You can read more — and find our own seasonal events — on our Events page.

Make Home Sweet Home your first stop

We may be a little biased, but we think Home Sweet Home is the perfect place to begin. Behind the 19th-century storefront you'll find room after room of fine furnishings, estate and costume jewelry, china and crystal, seasonal florals, French country and authentic European antiques, gifts, and treasures that change with every season — all styled into vignettes meant to spark an idea for your own home. Browse everything we carry, then wander the rest of downtown with a coffee in hand.
